The company was founded in 1979 by college roommates Roger Marino and Dick Egan. EMC stands for the initials of the company’s founders, and an anonymous third individual who remained nameless. They also offer storage products that are built to store and protect important information. EMC’s security division, called RSA Security, which they bought in 2006, develops products to protect and secure enterprise data, secure employee and partner access, and help to manage security information. They also acquired Prisa Networks in 2002 for their VisualSAN management products.
EMC switched its focus to including software and services in 2003. The company acquired Legato Systems for $1.3 billon and then also bought Documentum, a computer software manufacturer which makes enterprise content management systems for companies around the world.
EMC’s AutoStart product is a high availability solution that helps to give system level application failure protection to major data applications, such as SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server.
